These pieces are inspired by the well-known tiles in Topkapi Palace and Ayasofya (Hagia Sophia) Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey. The tiles were originally part of the palace of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificient in the 16th Century.  Mukerrem has taken the motif of the piece and added her individual style to it in order to create her art works.  The colors are inspired by sunsets on the Turkish Riviera, and have been carefully layered to create the appearance of a finely decorated frame enveloping the tulips and carnations.
