Illumination is a style of decorative art that typically adorns books and manuscripts. Scholars theorize that the first instances of this art date back to the 13 th century. The rise of the Ottoman Empire and the influences of multiple cultures fully developed the art form, and magnificent examples of illumination can be found in libraries and museums throughout the world. Indeed, the dates can often be determined by scholars from the details of this art form.

Changes in shapes, motifs, layering, and colors all point to certain periods in the Ottoman Empire, and give clues to the time period, the requestor, and to the artist. Although a matter of personal preference, many scholars feel that the 1500's (coincidentally during the time of the Western Renaissance, but directly related to the reign of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent) produced the finest examples of illumination. Several illuminators have achieved immortality through their contributions to this art.
